5/8th Students. Please read the following and leave a comment. I want you to specifically comment on the two things I bolded.
Perhaps we know more about the world than we used to, and insofar as knowledge is prerequisite to understanding, that is all to the good. But knowledge is not as much a prerequisite to understanding as is commonly supposed. We do not have to know everything about something in order to understand it; too many facts are often as much of an obstacle to understanding as too few. There is a sense in which we moderns and (post moderns) are inundated with facts to the detriment of understanding.
One of the reasons for this situation is that the very media we have mentioned are so designed as to make thinking seem unnecessary (though this is only an appearance). The packaging of intellectual positions and views is one of the most active enterprises of some of the best minds of our day. The viewer of television and U-tube, the listener to radio – pod casts – and streaming video casts, the reader of magazines, is presented with a whole complex of elements – all the way from ingenious rhetoric to carefully selected data and statistics – to make it easy for him to “make up his own mind” with the minimum of difficulty and effort. But the packaging is often done so effectively that the viewer, listener, or reader does not make up his own mind at all. Instead, he inserts a packaged opinion into his mind, somewhat like inserting a cassette into a cassette player. He then pushes a button and “plays back” the opinion whenever it seems appropriate to do so. He has performed acceptably without having had to think.

i’m confused
MORGAN, READ THE OTHERS AND SEE IF THAT HELPS YOU.
I didn’t quiet understand what you were trying to say
DID YOU READ WHAT THE OTHERS COMMENTED?
i’m confused too
DID YOU READ WHAT THE OTHERS SAID?
Wow. I also think that most times people only get one side of the story to “make up their own mind” on. I completely agree with you, though. The world is making up people’s mind’s. It all just depends on where you go for your info. If people only thought a little harder on some things, they see the truth or folly in what people say, and actually make up their own mind. But what does this have to do with us? Let me guess; Everything.
After reading to appinions on this entry {morgan and Dave’s comments I am going to gues what you mean. Example-
first I read Marga’s comment. I almost just wrote down exactly what she said and convince my self that that is the best answer.And never read Dav’s because I thought his was no good. Do you understand what I am trying to say. If not please leave me a comment or ask me during lit. {sorry if i misspelled anything}
P.S. Have you looked at the movie The Blue Butterfly?
i agree with david AND morgan. this article can be a little confusing, but it is true that the world (like what we read and see and watch) is what seems to make up our minds for us. if you see something that you think is cool or in your mind, what seems like the right thing to do, (which it probably isnt) then we do it. the only right way, is God’s way and that is the way people should follow, not the world’s way of things, but God’s way of things.
i got this out of the articles: that people are just listening to other peoples opinoins and but arnt really paying attention to what the opinion is and saying that its their opinion?like in mkovies its trying to make us belive stuff that isnt true. And their trying to make stuff which is bad look cool and if you dont do it your a “un cool”.
Some times to much information is cunfusing. We should use our minds to think, not to be like robots.
i no not guite get it would be such a big help if you can explain it in class but buy reading what you said i asume that you mean that if you are reading somthing that you really need to pay attention on what you reading like mabye try to find some literare devices in what your reading
NOT QUITE. TOO MUCH INFORMATION CAN BE SO CONFUSING THAT INSTEAD OF HELPING YOU UNDERSTAND THE TOPIC IT CONFUSES YOU.
THE SECOND PARAGRAPH WAS ALL ABOUT NOT THINKING FOR YOURSELF, BUT SIMPLY PLAYING BACK WHAT SOMEONE TOLD YOU.
There are too many difficult words in this. My mom had to explain it to me. I had too much information to understand it. So, this is an example of your first point.
It’s hard to make up your own mind when you don’t really know if the information you are given from the media is true.
cheking in!
me too comfused
DID YOU READ ANY OF THE OTHER COMMENTS?
I completely aggree with you. Today’s world is making everyone into living breathing ROBOTS!!! It’s actually kind of annoying. (FYI you spelled you-tube wrong)
Never mind those last comments. I believe that what the writer is trying to say is that you don’t have to have all the information to get what they’re trying to say, just the main topics. The media convinces you of their opinion instead of just giving the facts and letting you make your own opinion.
THIS ISNT ABOUT THE THING BUT…..I POSTED MY STORY AND IT LOOKS WIERED SO ILL BRING IT IN TOMARROW IF I CAN ITS 4 1/2 PAGES DOUBLE SPACED FONT 12! READ IT ITS GOOD IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF
this can get a little confusing and some people might not get it could you explaine it to the class.
the first bolded part confused me, but the first part made perfect sense.
It sounds like your saying is that our generation is not thinking enough because we have everything else to make our opinion for us. the how do you know if what someone is saying is original and so on. i hope what I am saying is somewhat accurate.
uhoh the one above this comment was by me felicia Menon but it didnt say that so sorry
okay that was me those two posts
I don’t todally get it but I think it means if you under do something or over do something it could both be bad
On my word processor i had paragrphs but it messed it up when i pasted it on to my blog ill bring in the firstdraft as a paper
i meant my peer edit! ill hand in my peer edit as a paper
This is about the paragraph! There was alot of big words witch made it hard to understand. I think its intresting that you would say that because just the other day i was saying the same thing. It is so true that all we do is listen and repeat we barely ever think about it, and i mean really think about it. I loved the analogy you used anout the casstet that was really intresting and made it easier to understand
um Mr.K I Really don’t get it.
YOU SHOULD HAVE CHECKED THE OTHER COMMENTS AND MAYBE THAT WOULD HAVE HELPED YOU.
Yeah, I really do agree with what you are saying, we don’t think of things ourselves so much. I talked with my dad about this and he gave an example about dogs. If you are doing a project or something on dogs, then you can just go on the internet and just like pick whatever topic we want to instead of just thinking of one ourself. So you just say “Hey! I really want that to be my topic” and you can even just copy it even though it is against the law. So you take someone elses idea and break the law at the same time. So you’re right, it is well packaged. Also about your first paragraph, that is true in some cases, but I don,t think in all. I know what you wrote kind of makes sense, but you are right about that. Uh, I do think that it would be better for us to think of these things ourselves. Like the people that actually wrote those things on the internet. That is what I thought about that. Do I get an A ? Just kidding!
on the first bolded part i agree that sometimes there are just to many facts and then they get all scrambled up and it makes things too hard to understand. i totally agree with alex’s comment but then im not giving my own oppinion im just listening and taking the package that alex sends and storing it away like you said in the second bolded part in paragraph two… but are you sying that everything the media says is a lie? no i dont think so i think that to form our own oppinion we have to do the work we have to research things we question we can be so nieve or gullable to believe everything we hear. God gave us brains so lets use them…although there is one benefit to taking others oppinions and using them even if its not your own… it means your listening and that is refreshing to me because i was sorta thinking that we just dont stop and listen any more and i guess i was wrong becasue to take otehrs opinions we have to listen to them first… soemtimes if u actually agree with that person instead of saying “what she said’ you can do ur research and add on to it.
p.s. my first draft will b in tomarrow sorry i wouldve turned it in today but i decided to add on to it last min.
p.p.s. o dang . i forgot…see you at school!
I think that david and morgan are right but i for got the what we have to do so thats all i have to say
IF YOU READ DAVID AND MORGAN’S COMMENTS THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD A GOOD IDEA WHAT YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO DO. I’M SORRY THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY.
Hi I thought the baseball thing was making a good point. But a-lot of us thought it was boring. I thought it was borin’ because we did not listen well. I listend to half of it but than I did not listen to the rest of it. I relised that if I dont pay attention to the hole thing Im not going to understand it that well. any way this sort of a short lesson. I will try to listen next time more carfuly.
Im having trouble sitting by bailey. and she is one of my friends so I dont whant to hurt her feelings by yelling at her or egnoring her on a regular basis. I am being tempted to do things that I should not.I just want you to know whats going on. And if you have than why arnt you doing any thing about it?
yes people are making up other people’s minds. people just listen to other people and don’t think for themselves.
i agree; i don’t think it’s right that we have to listen to all these critics (like movie critics) and media people, and if they say a movie is bad then its bad, we don’t go and see it for ourselves. we take the opinion of the critic and plant it into our minds before we see the movie ourselves and make our own opinion. then we go around telling everyone, “don’t see this movie- some people i don’t even know said it was bad, so it must be bad.” like linde said, we all have different minds that God gave us and we should use them ourselves.
i am confused to
DID YOU READ THE OTHER COMMENTS?
this was kind of hard to understand, but I think that we should make up our minds for ourselves and not just agree with what other people say just because they say its true. I Agree with Linde and Krista when they said “we all have different minds that God gave us and we should use them ourselves.” We should think for ourselves because we are able to, thats why God gave us a brain, not so we should just have other people think for us but we could have our own opinions.
yeah, the first bolded part was pretty confusing, and i really didn’t get what it meant. the second part is about looking @ magazines and youtube and stuff and how it gives us preloaded opinions, right?
i did do the leave a comment thing
hi
now that i understand what your saying i agree with you, like our generation is going by what someone else said and by ourselves.
Dear Mr. K ,
I think what your trying to say is were to focussed On tecnoligy that we are trying to make more to quickly and we’re not focussing on whats important
Dear Mr. K: I think the best example of what what you’re trying to say is when you have directions on how to make somehting operate. Sometimes if there are too many directions and they are very technical, I just try to make it work without using the directions. But if there aren’t enough directions that doesn’t help either.
If you had to give an opionon on something and you didn’t have one so you just repeated what somebody else said that sounded good.
i agree with matt’s first comment.
Mr K.,
For the first bolded Paragraph: I think too much information is bad. Sometimes having a bit of curiosity is good. For example, if I had a hampster and I got home from school oneday and my mother told me that she found it dead in it’s running wheel then I would’t need to know every single thing that happened…and if I did know I would be extremely grossed out!!! Having too little facts doesn’t really give us and answer. Look at the evidence when you don’t ask questions.
For the secound bolded pararaph: Having instruction is a good thing and so is discipline. But when you are repeating stuff like a robot and not thinking for yourself then things like that could become a habbit. If, when you grew up, became a food critisist and answeredonly exactly what you had learned then it would’nt be much of your opinion would it. If your teacher made a mistake in class and you had learned to only repeat what you learn then you would go on with your entire life making mistakes! Soon you wouldn’t be learning anything because it would all be…as Mr. K. says…VOMIT!!!!
That’s all I have to say.
-Ari
P.S. Mr. K I hope this will make up for being late!!!!
